Fascial tissue is often the forgotten component in bodily flexibility and mobility. The fascial system is a “web-like” elastic structure, surrounding every muscle, bone, blood vessel, nerve and organ. It coordinates muscle activity and controls range of motion.
The structure of the fascia requires that it be mechanically loaded (stretched and relaxed) to maintain its elastic properties. Simply put, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Our bodies are 70% water (with the fascia containing the majority of it in a gel-like state, amongst a web of elastic fibres).
Movement pumps this fluid around the muscular system, keeping it hydrated and cleared of waste. Stretching the fascia muscles is like wringing out a sponge – bringing new water when relaxed. If a muscle loses its ability to stretch and elongate (spasms) due to trauma, injury or repetitive movement, the fascia can no longer stretch and relax.
